On March 31, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced that one of its advisors in Syria was killed in the Israeli airstrikes that targeted the outskirts of Damascus city in the early morning.
“At dawn today, Friday, Milad Heydari, one of the IRGC’s military advisors in Syria, was martyred in a criminal attack by the Zionist regime near Damascus,” the IRGC said in a statement carried by state media.
The guards vowed to retaliate for Heydari’s death, saying: “Undoubtedly, the fake and criminal Zionist regime will receive a response for this crime.”
Citing a military source, the state-run Syrian Arab News Agency reported just after midnight that Israeli warplanes launched “salvos of missiles” at a position near Damascus from the direction of the occupied Golan Heights. Initially, no casualties were reported.
This was the second Israel attack to target Damascus in less than 24 hours. Early on March 30, a series of airstrikes hit positions in the capital, wounding two soldiers and causing material damage.
The IRGC maintains a fairly large presence in Syria to advise and assist government forces. Last November, an officer of the guards’ aerospace forces, Colonel Davood Jafari, was killed by a roadside bomb near Damascus. Back then, Tehran blamed the Israeli intelligence for the assassination.
Iran will not likely let the killing of another one of its advisors in Syria go without a response. This could lead to a serious confrontation with Israel.
