Early on March 12, ISIS cells raided a post of Iranian-backed forces in southern Deir Ezzor, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
Seven fighters who were manning the post were all killed as a result of the attack. The post in question is located in the area of Talat al-Tamah near the town of al-Mayadin, one of the largest urban centers in southern Deir Ezzor.
“ISIS members set up fire to the post and burned down the bodies of the Iranian-backed militiamen, after seizing their weapons,” the London-based monitoring group said in its report.
The attack was likely launched from the Homs desert – the ISIS stronghold in central Syria. The region lays between eastern Homs and western Deir Ezzor.
ISIS cells have been attempting to expand their influence in the central region for a while now. The terrorists launched dozens of attacks against government forces in the Hama-Aleppo-Raqqa triangle as well as in western and southern Deir Ezzor over the last year.
The Syrian Arab Army and its allies are currently working to secure the Hama-Aleppo-Raqqa triangle. The western and southern region of Deir Ezzor will likely see similar efforts soon. Iranian forces are already gearing up.
