The security situation in both Syria and Iraq remains complicated. The Baghdad government is trying to restore the law and order as well as to eliminate ISIS cells across Iraq:

  • In the Dibris Heights area in the province of Kirkuk, airstrikes of the US-led coalition eliminated 25 ISIS members;
  • 2 ISIS members were arrested in the city of Mosul. While the city was declared liberated in 2017, ISIS cells operate and carry out terrorist attacks inside it. Security forces respond by cracking down on known ISIS cells and carrying out operations to prevent further terrorist attacks;
  • In the al-Shirqat district of Salahuddin province, 5 people, including three children, were wounded when a car bomb exploded near the local school;
  • In the Tuz Khurmatu region, east of Tikrit, an explosion at the weapons depot killed 2 members of the Popular Mobilization Units and injured 28 others. 3 civilians were injured in the same incident;
  • According to reports in Iraqi media, the country’s military carried out strikes on ISIS positions in the Euphrates Valley, inside Syria. Recently, the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) halted their ground operation against ISIS thus allowing the terroris group to boost its presence along the Syrian-Iraqi border.

The security issues in Syria are not limited to the SDF’s inability to put an end to the growing ISIS influence in the Euphrates Valley.

  • On November 4, the ISIS-linked news agency Amaq claimed that about 50 SDF members had been killed in a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (VBIED) attack in the city of Raqqa;
  • Radical militant groups, first of all Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, continued to violate the casefire regime in the Idlib de-escalation zone in northwestern Syria.
